Today the Berejiklian Government has announced a series of draft marine conservation areas. This is after four years of draft proposals and community consultations, and still no decision has been made. This proposal sells the environment and our tourism sector short.
They consist of 25 disparate, non-contiguous marine reserves with varying levels of protection at each location, a set of artificial reefs and intertidal protected areas with limited restrictions. Ten of the reserve sites are already existing protected areas.
Labor has been committed to a single, iconic marine park for Sydney since 2014, and under a Foley Labor government a Sydney Marine Park will be established to protect the 3000 species documented in Sydney Harbour.
